On the second and final day of Let Her Rip—Specialized’s launch event for their new female-specific bike, the Camber—more than 50 women showed up to learn some new skills and ride together.

Led by head coach Sylvie Allen and her team, the women were split into five groups before heading out to level-appropriate trails in the beautiful Emerald Forest and Valley areas. Through session-ing and encouragement, the riders took their newfound skills to the trails and conquered technical sections together.

Today, Skate Like a Girl announced key partnerships to create the first global female skateboarding qualifying contest for X Games Austin. The Wheels of Fortune annual contest hosted by non-profit organization Skate Like a Girl will take place May 8th, 2016 in Seattle, WA at All Together Skatepark. Entering its seventh consecutive year, the 2016 event is shaping up to be the biggest one yet, teaming up with the Women’s Skateboarding Alliance (WSA) and ESPN X Games. As a pre-qualifying event, the top two finishers from the Wheels of Fortune Advanced Division will be selected as “Wild Card” athletes to officially compete in Women’s Skateboard Street at X Games Austin, in early June 2016.

Skate Like a Girl is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, providing an innovative approach to female empowerment through skateboarding. The organization is focused on helping women of all ages and skateboarding abilities reach their full individual potential, while also supporting and advancing the sport worldwide. The group hosts programs and events to build leadership skills, confidence, self advocacy, and civic engagement, in a fun, safe, and positive environment.

“Seven years ago, we started Wheels of Fortune to create a platform for women to gain recognition in the sport of skateboarding,” said Kristin Ebeling, Skate Like a Girl Director. “We are honored that our event is now a benchmark on a path to a professional skateboarding career for the female skateboarders internationally. Thanks to our major partners, All Together Skate Park, the WSA, and X Games, this will be another revolutionary year for women’s action sports.”

As the premiere global management and consulting agency dedicated to authentically representing the industry voice of women’s skateboarding, WSA has officially sanctioned Skate Like a Girl’s 7th Annual Wheels of Fortune contest, for over 100 female athletes in five unique divisions: 12 and under co-ed youth, beginner women, intermediate women, golden girls (30+), and advanced women.

“We’ve served as an advocate and regulatory body for women’s pro skateboarding for over 10 years,” says Mimi Knoop, Founder and President of WSA. “With worldwide telecast support from ESPN’s X Games and increased participation by female skateboarding globally, we now have an opportunity to further support and develop up-and-coming women skateboarders on an international stage. We are thrilled to be working with Skate Like a Girl and the X Games to reach this critical milestone in women’s skateboarding.”

“It’s fantastic we can all work together to support the groth and progression of women’s skateboarding globally,” said Rich Bigge, ESPN X Games director of competition. “Wheels of Fortune Seven will be a great event and we’re excited to welcome two new skaters to compete at X Games Austin alongside the world’s best.”

Using the hook of skateboarding, Skateistan focuses on engaging the world’s hardest-to-reach youth aged between 5-17 years. Once children latch onto skateboarding, Skateistan enrolls them in their core educational programs: Skate and Create, Back to School and Youth Leadership. Skateistan currently provides full-time programming for more than 1600 young people in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa. Twice a year Skateistan looks to the public for donations to ‘Keep Skateistan Rolling’. The month-long fundraising campaign can be supported by one-off donations, fundraising and monthly donations.

  • We teamed up our friends at Grand Trunk Goods to host our 2nd “Girlz Nite Out” event this year in Chicago, IL. Pro skaters Leticia Bufoni, Lacey Baker, Vanessa Torres, Alexis Sablone, Samarria Brevard and Marisa Dal Santo came out for a night of chillin before their big contest weekend. We started the night with a private dinner for the girls and hooked them up with gear from our sponsors: custom MAHFIA hammocks from Grand Trunk, backpacks from Poler Stuff and the latest issue of The Skate Witches Zine. After dinner, local ladies of shred joined us for drinks, pool and arcade games while skate videos from Girls Skate Network and MAHFIA played on the flatscreen TVs. We raffled off pro model decks from hoopla and Meow skateboards and a handful of lucky winners went home stoked. Good times!

  • The first ever Women’s SLS Nike SB Super Crown World Championship went down this past weekend in Chicago, IL and MAHFIA was there to document it. The course was massive but all the girls stepped it up and rose to the challenge. The contest had 2 sections: runs and best trick. Lacey Baker was in the lead after putting together a flawless technical run but after each skater had 5 attempts at best trick, Leticia came out on top landing a 360 flip on her final try to bump Vanessa Torres to 2nd place. Alana Smith took home 3rd. Congrats to all the girls who skated – it’s not easy to skate under this kind of pressure…talk about nerves! History was made as this was the first women’s skateboarding contest to be live webcasted internationally online. If you missed it, you can watch the whole thing again at http://www.streetleague.com. FOX Sports 1 will be airing a one-hour special on TV October 18th at 4pm (ET).
