  • Upon celebrating its 10 year anniversary, Action Sports Alliance, a nonprofit empowering and encouraging young women’s participation as well as increasing professional opportunities for women in action sports launches its newest division, Women’s Skateboarding Alliance (WSA). WSA is a global management and consulting agency dedicated to authentically representing the industry voice of women’s skateboarding.

“We have worked together to maintain legitimacy and fairness at professional women’s skateboarding events worldwide since 2005. The formation of WSA will allow us to further provide what’s necessary for the skaters and our clients,” says Mimi Knoop, Founder and President of WSA.

Founded in early 2015, Women’s Skateboarding Alliance is comprised of an executive leadership collective featuring top women in action sports: Mimi Knoop, President and Founder; Lisa Whitaker, VP of Sports and Competitions; Kim Woozy VP of Marketing and YuLin Olliver, VP of Business Development. The WSA educates, improves and delivers the most current trends and information for women’s skateboarding worldwide, working alongside the action sports industry’s top influencers and advocates.

Honored to announce its new partnership with Street League Skateboarding (SLS), the WSA will work closely with SLS to organize the first ever women’s professional skateboarding competition within SLS. WSA will be the official women’s skateboarding organizer and resource for women’s skateboarding related initiatives in conjunction with SLS.

“Mimi has built a program that has been a key voice in women’s skateboarding,” explains SLS President and COO, Brian Atlas. “As a premium platform for competitive skateboarding, SLS needed to work with the best advocates in women’s skateboarding to make sure that the right women skateboarders were included and that their interests were considered while developing our inaugural contest. With their guidance, we are looking forward to developing a long-term plan to include women in Super Crown and beyond,” says SLS President, Brian Atlas.

The competition will invite eight of the world’s best female professional skateboarders to compete at the SLS Nike SB Super Crown World Championship, October 4, 2015 in Chicago, IL. The roster will feature athletes: Leticia Bufoni, Alexis Sablone, Lacey Baker, Pamela Rosa, Vanessa Torres, Alana Smith, Marisa Dal Santo, and Samarria Brevard. The Women’s competition will be live webcasted around the world on StreetLeague.com on October 4th starting at 2:45pm ET. In addition, the Women’s contest will have a dedicated one-hour premiere special telecast on FS1 and FOX Sports GO on October 18th in the USA at 4pm ET.

“Our new partnership with SLS is truly historic. The creation of this event for professional female skateboarders will foster the growth of new female participants and expand the existing SLS fanbase. The unprecedented coverage the women will receive on FS1 and on SLS’s huge international webcast will advance skateboarding both locally and globally,” says Knoop.

Since 2005, Actions Sports Alliance has been responsible for organizing all Women’s X Games skateboard competitions and has consulted various contest organizers and event properties including the US Open of Surfing, Kimberley Diamond Cup and Vans Girls Combi Pool Classic. The newly formed WSA will continue to communicate and work closely with the Action Sports Alliance’s international advisory board whose members hail from Asia, Australia, Europe, South America and the US.

“I think it’s awesome that the Alliance has partnered with Street League. They’ve been advocating for female skateboarding since the beginning and without it we wouldn’t have had nearly as many opportunities,” says 2015 X Games Women’s Skateboard Street gold medalist, Alexis Sablone.

  • There has been a lot of intrigue and attention around Skateistan and their use of skateboarding to empower cultures and in particular women around the World. So we set off with board under arm all the way to Cambodia to see how things were rolling over there for the ladies stepping on skateboards.
We met the first girl skaters of Cambodia; Charra, Tin and Nhouen of Skateistan. The scene in its very early days, but progressing thanks to these three ladies who are acting as the spokespeople and inspirers of skateboarding for women in Cambodia. Pushing things forward and paving the way, to show whats possible and why girls should skate.

This is only a tease. There is so much more to the story.. which we will be heading back to tell soon.

For now donate to help keep Skateistan rolling! skateistan.org/donate

  • In episode one of “Gieger Goes,” produced by Vurb Moto, she returns to her roots in the WMX series, one that she and several other top female racers left behind when it was scaled down significantly after the 2012 season. Geiger returns at Freestone MX in Texas, where Mother Nature greets the ladies with some torrential rains and treacherous track conditions.

From there, it’s off to the Lake Havasu round of the WORCS series for a test of nature’s extremes on the other end of the spectrum: crippling heat. It’s an event that even the sport’s best riders have said is the most grueling race in America.

Filmed and Edited by Natalie Simmons

    About #GiegerGoes:

Tarah Gieger is putting her body through the ringer as she wraps up her 20s. Knocking on the door of 30, the fastest moto chick from Puerto Rico has decided to hit the big 3-0 as hard as she possibly can, taking her passions and rolling them together into one year of gnarly behavior that would make a lesser citizen weak in the knees.

Not many fans realize what a versatile athlete Gieger has always been, if the various motorcycle accolades didn’t already communicate that. Born in Puerto Rico, Gieger was an avid surfer for most of her life, and even still surfs at dangerously close to professional level. She also finds time to compete in downhill mountain biking, as well.

This year, knocking on the door of the big 3-0, Gieger refuses to slow down as she competes in moto, downhill MTB, and casually prepares herself for a 32-mile paddleboard race in Hawaii, with cameras following her along for the ride. With help from Vurb Moto, Gieger presents the viewing public with Gieger Goes, a series about her life of adventure on two wheels and just about anything else she can get her hands on.

  • A few years ago Leticia Bufoni moved out to California after dreaming of the perfect skate spots. She barely knew anyone, and she didn’t speak a word of English. It didn’t take long ‘til she moved back to Brazil. Fast forward a few years, and she’s back. Now living in LA, she’s hunting for spots and is on a mission to film her video part. But is everything in California as perfect as it seems?

  • Work in Skateboarding was created in 2012 to promote skateboarding and its career opportunities to potential future generations. They recently interviewed MAHFIA’s founder Kim Woozy, check out the full article on http://www.workinskateboarding.com and follow them for updates as they are working on an internship program for the future.

What inspired you to create MAHFIA and why was it needed?
I wanted to create MAHFIA.TV because there wasn’t any media that spoke to me personally. The main core skate/snow/surf mags rarely featured any girls content at all and other media outlets/magazines “for girls” were mainly focused on beauty and fashion. I created MAHFIA.TV as a way for my friends (female pro riders who I was working with at my old job) to get more exposure and develop their careers and also because I wanted a media outlet that I was personally stoked on – something that was an authentic representation of girls who ride. Once we got going, I found out that there were tons of other girls who were stoked on what we were doing too.

How is all the content produced?
I do a majority of the filming/shooting of video and photo content and work with our video producer and my right hand man, Johnny Varsity, on post-production. I met Johnny in college where we were both media majors and worked on films together so when it comes to producing content we work together pretty seamlessly. We recently started working more with freelance filmers and photogs such as Hayley Gordon (surf) and Nam-Chi Van (skate) and Nico Ricoy (lifestyle/fashion) which has been great. They are insanely talented and I am always inspired by their work.

What’s your work history relating to video and action sports?
In college I interned at a video production company and also worked at the outdoor gear shop on campus at UC San Diego – we sold and rented surfboards, snowboards, camping gear, etc. That was my first taste of the action sports industry — I remember going to ASR Tradeshow for the first time and being like oh shit this is awesome! Senior year I landed an internship at Osiris Shoes. They were just starting up a girls brand and needed someone to manage their MySpace page. Eventually I became a full time graphic designer there and got my hands in marketing naturally since I skated/snowboarded etc. I spent 3 years there total and when I left I was in charge of Girls Brand Marketing and was also the Girls Team Manager where I helped foster the careers of young skaters including Leticia Bufoni and Allysha Bergado who were just starting out as groms then.

In your opinion how do women approach skateboarding differently to men?
I think women are eager to learn new things but generally want some instruction and basic knowledge first where as guys just go for it without thinking too much about it. I remember wanting to learn how to skate when I was younger but hit a wall because I had no resources to learn. I had a subscription to SG Magazine where I could see photos of pros like Vanessa Torres and Amy Caron and got stoked so I went out and bought a board. There were no skateparks around me and I didn’t know anyone who skated that could teach me. Now there are youtube trick tips online, public skateparks popping up everywhere, and female specific clinics and camps from orgs such as Skate Like A Girl as well as brands that specifically support women in skateboarding such as Hoopla and Meow Skateboards.

What are some of your favourite companies/media outlets in skateboarding made for women?
I work closely with Mimi Knoop (founder of The Alliance and hoopla skateboards) as well as Lisa Whitaker (founder of Girls Skate Network and Meow Skateboards) and of course Skate Like A Girl. I’m a huge fan of these organizations and the women behind it. In addition to being my friends, they are super passionate, talented, hardworking, good people who are truly invested in the growth of the girls skate scene – and that’s why I support them. At the end of the day I’m a huge fan of anyone who pursues their passion and helps others along the way.

What is your advice for women who would like to pursue a career in the skate industry?
I fully support women who are interested in getting into the skate industry. We need more women in our industry in order to grow it in the right direction. For a long time, it’s only been dudes at the table and the skate industry could really use some diversity. Find other like-minded women (and men) to support you and give you encouragement – that’s major. One of the most important pieces of advice I can give is to support other women along the way — you’ll find success much quicker this way and quickly see how valuable it is to have a strong network. Plus, it’s way more fun to have a bunch of friends as opposed to enemies. There is no way I would have even thought about doing half the things I’ve done if I didn’t have the support of other women in the industry – the same women who have become my lifelong bffs.

Canada. The girls also gave punk rock and skate clinics and skated with everyone that attended the event. The girls in Skitch are part of a Seattle-based skate crew called The Skate Witches, that encourage other girls to skate and share the philosophy, with practice and a good attitude, you can overcome any obstacle in life. Kristin has been promoting girls skateboarding in the Pacific Northwest and she works together with Skate Like A Girl Seattle and also puts out a zine, The Skate Witches, in her spare time. Photographer Jessica Fulford-Dobson will present her series of portraits, Skate Girls of Kabul, in a major new exhibition presented by Roshan from 15 to 28 April 2015 at London’s Saatchi Gallery.

Jessica Fulford-Dobson won 2nd prize in the 2014 Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize with Skate Girl, 2014, just one of a series of works made on location in Kabul, where young girls from poor and displaced families were being taught to skateboard as a hook to get them back into full-time education. After just one year of attending the Back to School programme, the girl in the prize-winning portrait (above) has passed her first three educational grades and is now enrolled in the national school system. She still attends Skateistan in her free time.

Wanting to capture the wonderful story of Afghan girls skateboarding, Jessica first approached Skateistan in 2012 to ask them if she could visit their site in Kabul. Skateistan is an NGO founded in 2007 by Australian skate enthusiast Oliver Percovich. It now has over 60 staff in several countries. Percovich was enthusiastic about Jessica’s idea, and agreed to give her access to the schools in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif.

The girls soon accepted Jessica’s presence, especially as she worked simply, without artificial lighting, and on her own. Photographing with natural light limited the shoot locations within the relatively dark skate park, but this actually helped the children’s natural personalities to shine through. Jessica says “I met so many impressive women and girls in Afghanistan: a teacher as tough and determined as any man; young Afghans in their early twenties who were volunteering at an orphanage and were passionate about being seen as strong and willing to fight for themselves, rather than as victims of circumstance; and girls who were being educated to be leaders in their communities and who were already thinking carefully about their own and their country’s future. And of course there were the young skate girls, so fun to be around and so totally unspoilt. I feel lucky to have met them. I hope that this collection captures something of their spirit: their joy in life, their individuality and their community.”

Morland Tate will be publishing Skate Girls of Kabul, a book to coincide with the exhibition, to tell the remarkable story of Afghan girls who have taken up skateboarding, thanks to Skateistan, an Afghan NGO charity that provides skate parks as a hook to get children from disadvantaged families back into the educational system. Colourful, free-flowing and full of life, these Afghan girls bring a new dimension to skateboarding culture. Skate Girls of Kabul includes a foreword by legendary skater Tony Hawk. http://www.morlandtate.com £29.99

‘DAYS LIKE THESE’: THE GROUNDBREAKING NEW UK FEMALE SKATE FILM SET TO DROP WINTER 2015

Whilst models strut the catwalk with decks under arm and ‘skate style’ graces the pages of fashion magazines, videographer, Jenna Selby has been out capturing what female skateboarding in the UK is really about. Since she released the first-ever female European skate film in 2009, the quality of girls skateboarding has gone up another level. With her new film, ‘Days Like These’, coming winter 2015, she is ready to show what it really means to be a girl who skates…

In 2009 Jenna released the first ever European female skate film ‘ As If, And What?’. Following on from its success, the director and filmmaker is back with the second installment, ‘Days Like These’. ‘With the level of female skating getting ever better it seemed like the right time to make a new film and to showcase what these girls are doing.’ Jenna explains. ‘The project will essentially document the skills of a core group of the top female riders in and around the UK and Ireland, showing how these riders interact with their environment (differently to most people) and how they creatively can make something from an object which most people wouldn’t give a second thought to.’

Featuring a selection of the skate industry’s top female riders, such as Lucy Adams, Josie Millard and Dora Horvath, the film was shot all around UK and Ireland. Aside from the action, the project sets out to showcase the backgrounds of the girls in their local areas and visits some of the legendary women who have helped shape the industry into what it is today. ‘These women are out there pushing the sport of skateboarding. They are not just a group of people who carry a board around!’

    Coming winter 2015.
